Good leaders know how to nurture growth in other people.

You might be tired of your current manager or supervisor at work talking about showing leadership, but you should listen. Having better business leadership skills means promotions and possibly even starting your own small business. Customers are faithful to companies that are known to truly care about them. When your team is expected to follow a moral code, the rules are probably going to be followed easily.

When trying to be a good leader, it's important to be truthful about the situation. If something isn't working out as planned, let your team know. If you need to change something, tell them. Your team needs to know what is going on, whether it be good news or bad.

A great idea for anyone in a leadership role to try is to periodically write an "open letter" to the team members, or workforce. In this letter, you can acknowledge good work, overall performance and show your appreciation for all they do. There is nothing like a little praise to boost morale.

Conquer your fear. Fear can be a terrible thing for you to experience, especially if you're a leader. Instead, start paying attention to what the fear is telling you. Learn to process it in a way that is healthy and in a way that urges you to move beyond the fear to something more.

Own the things you're telling others. Be accountable for your actions and words as a leader. You are acting as the heart of your company; everything you do will reflect on the business. If you have made missteps or errors, you must acknowledge them. Never expect others to deal with the problem for you.

Dress the part. There's a perception to leadership. If you look the role, people will respond to your leadership much more positively and openly. If you dress poorly, it'll be a tougher road to climb instilling leadership. It's possible still, but make it easier on yourself and be the best dressed person in the office.

Keep in mind that hope is not always a good thing. If you or your business are involved in a situation that has an inevitable and bad ending, do what is necessary to terminate the situation and move on. Employees will never forgive blind optimism in such circumstances, and it's better for everyone to have a bad situation behind them as soon as possible.

Be confident. If you are not confident about a judgment call, make sure you think it through before you enact it. The respect your team has for you relies a lot on your confidence when you talk to them, when you give orders and when you make judgment calls.

Having great business leadership skills does not always equate to being in a position of authority over others. However, it does often mean having more power over your own income and fate. Use these ideas to advance your professional life, and hopefully, advance your personal dreams.
