In order to be a great leader, you must be able to communicate your vision to your team. Explain clearly what the common goal is, and instill a vision of success in the group. Getting everyone working together on something they all believe in cements your leadership role in the group.

Being decisive is an excellent way to improve your leadership. Because you are the designated leader, logs of decisions will be up to you. If people feel differently about what a solution should be, you have to be the one to make the decision that will help everyone instead of just some.

Express a vision for the company. Great leaders differentiate themselves from great managers because of vision. They see where the company needs to be 5 years, 10 years and 20 years down the road. If you've got the vision, share it with your employees. Make them part of the team that'll help get you there.

Vulnerability and leadership

"One only has to look at the current thinking and work around vulnerability and leadership to appreciate the impact that being vulnerable has in becoming a more authentic, compassionate and effective leader. A strong contributor to this field is researcher and author Brene Brown. In her book Dare to Lead she says, ‘vulnerability is the [...]

Be open to new ideas, perspectives, and ways of doing things. Many companies want to constantly repeat something that has proven successful for them. There is little wrong with that, but inadvertent leaders try putting too much effort into one thing that worked. Thoughtful leadership should acknowledges success, while also recognizing that there are ways to improve.

Your employees judge you on your decisions. They way you mete out responsibility, fire, hire and promote others will help them form opinions of you. Demonstrating favoritism and failing to reward good work is sure to sink morale and hinder productivity.

Be prepared for conflict and try to deal with it before it gets out of hand. Ignoring conflict will make the problem worse and make you look too weak to handle it. Practicing good communication skills with your employees will help them feel more respected even if they don't agree with specific decisions.

A good leader is able to help develop strong leadership skills in others. If you try to micro-manage every detail of your business, you won't have time to look at the bigger picture. Having trustworthy employees who can lead others will give you the chance to delegate responsibilities as your company continues to grow.

Reject Fast Solutions – Solve Problems Slowly

"Reject first solutions unless the barn is on fire. Fast-solution leaders: #1. Choose done over working on creative solutions. Choosing the fast solution restores the status quo. Creativity is the ability to reject… Continue reading →"

You might feel like starting each day or shift with a motivational speech, but this can get old for your crew quickly. As a matter of fact, such tactics are overrated. The biggest impact you make in terms of personnel is who you hire, who gets fired, and who gets assigned to the big projects.

Finish what you start. Don't be the kind of business leader that is always giving motivational speeches. Whenever you have a realistic chance of closing out the execution of a stated goal, personally see that it gets done. That will tell colleagues and clients that you mean business. It also sets the bar for what you expect of those under you.

Be open with your communication with your team. Good communication is essential for effective teamwork. Make sure your team feels that any questions are welcome by having a helpful attitude. Your team cannot work for you if they are not sure of what you want. Keep an open-door policy for this reason.

Develop skill at decision-making. Effective leadership means skill at making decisions. It will be necessary to take risks. Quick decisions, using all your knowledge about a situation, will help to show others you understand and make them want to follow you. Never second-guess any decision that you make. Not every decision is going to have the right outcome, and you must learn from your mistakes.

The number one differentiator of effective leaders

"Great leaders are able to balance task-focus (getting things done) with people-focus (inspiring, developing, and empowering others). Highly task-focused leaders tend to have tunnel vision in their drive for results, rather than applying a broader lens that recognises the need to engage people. The way you use humor in the presence of others can influence their perceptions of your leadership abilities. For example, you may find that constant self-deprecation has an unfavorable effect on others' respect for your power. Frequent use of this type of humor communicates immaturity and an inability to be serious.

You can use your leadership role in many positive ways. Try organizing a community outreach, and take your team to visit a homeless shelter, bringing food, or comfort items. Find a charity, and encourage your team to participate in some way. Your role as a leader does not have to be confined to a workplace. Your skills can be used to change lives.

Try not to show favoritism. Give everyone the same interest and respect when you communicate. A good leader treats everyone with respect. Do your best to be fair and then follow through on your word.

As a leader, your words are the tools you use to motivate people, whether in good ways, or bad. Words are a powerful asset. To motivate your team, or workforce, use the most powerful motivating words you can. These include: thank you, please, great job, glad to see you, or any uplifting words that will boost the confidence of your team.

The best leaders are inevitably ones who have a knack for hiring the right people to work with them, assembling a team that is both cohesive and motivated. One bad apple spoils the whole bunch, as the saying goes. When putting together the winning team, an effective leader is able to recognize the weak link and remove it from the chain.

Don't get too bogged down in your everyday tasks. As the leader, you need to look at the big picture. Keep your vision in mind as you look to the future of your business. Evaluate every employee, their individual talents and how they can continue to grow as your business expands.

Falling short as a leader is never a desired place to be. You want to do your best, and you want to realize what is required of you in order to lead.
