Research Paper: The Importance of Purpose

Image
Research Paper By Mark Bishop (Executive Coach, UNITED STATES) Introduction As I developed both my coaching model and power tool for the certified coaching program at ICA, I spent a good deal of time considering the importance of purpose in life and leadership.  In my experience, many people go through jobs, companies, and careers based merely on what opportunities; roles, companies, or assignments; come available and without sufficient consideration of what makes them happy. I’ve seen many colleagues pursue opportunities because they felt it might be a good career move, without regard to what they enjoy doing and how they want to contribute.   We spend an inordinate amount of time in our working environment; it amounts to more than 13 years of the total lifespan for most adults.  With that much significance on our working environment, it pays to focus on what makes us happy at work and try to maximize that feeling as much as we can over those 13 years! With this thought in mind, I set

LEADERSHIP? It's Easy If You Do It Smart

Image
Leadership is not something that comes easy to most people. In fact, the majority of people have no idea what it takes to be a good leader. If you are here because you desire to develop leadership skills, or you would just like to know what it takes to be a leader, then continue to the following article. A successful leader needs to maintain a balanced public and private life. Having a good reputation in the community is vital to continued success. Being in a leadership role invites scrutiny, so it is important to maintain humility and exercise moderation. Do not give anyone something to point to that disqualifies you as a leader. Know your competition just as well as you know your own company. Business isn't just about what's happening between the walls in your space. You need to make decisions based off competitive movement. If you can't make decisions because you don't know the competition, then expect your employees to see it as a weakness in leadership. Befriend a

Research Paper: Complex Dynamic Systems Coaching Theory

Image
Research Paper By Bianca Prodescu (Systems Coach, NETHERLANDS) Systems coaching is becoming a popular trend, due to the need of pursuing long-lasting changes in the behavior that do not negatively impact other parts of the client’s life. The aim is to look beyond quick solutions that only target symptoms and scarce attempts to change aimed to the edge of the comfort zone which is immediately absorbed. In systems coaching, the approach is moving from seeing the coaching relationship as a one-to-one cause-effect solution exploration, towards understanding the client’s relationships system: the team, the department, the family, etc. with the intent of creating awareness and visibility of the impact the environment has on the client. There is still the risk of a simplistic view approach: that the individual is seen as an independent agent within a system that can be fully defined and contained. Thus giving the client the impression that they can engineer any desired change. This paper aims

How To Address All Your Worries With One of These Two Actions

Image
A few weeks ago, I was participating in the annual Dale Carnegie instructor re-certification and the topic of worry came up. A discussion began on the difference between concern and worry. One of my colleagues pointed out that a healthy business is often referred to as a “going concern.” The implication is that a going concern is something positive, but that a “going worry” wouldn’t be. Most everyone I know (including me) struggles with this distinction in practice. Yet, the technical distinction is fairly clear. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines worry as: to think about problems or fears : to feel or show fear and concern because you think that something bad has happened or could happen And concern as: to relate to (something or someone) : to be about (something or someone) : to affect or involve The bottom line? Concern is what we have when we plan to influence or affect the situation in some way. So, here’s how to address all your worries: Decide if the thing you are worried ab

Simple Tips To Understanding Leadership

Image
A good leader is able to serve their employees. You can learn the skills you need to become a helpful and more productive leader. You may learn some new things. Don't let good talent go to waste. If someone is earning huge profits for your company, be sure to promote them, give them a raise, or, if you aren't in a position to do those things, recommend the person to someone who is. If you fail to do this, you might find that the employee has left for your competitor. You need to find the innate qualities in yourself that can help you become a good leader. Although you may not naturally tend toward a leadership role, there is some aspect of your personality that you can develop which will help you to take charge. With time, experience and practice, you can hone your skills and develop your leadership abilities. Leaders aren't afraid to ask questions. If they don't know something, they ask. Follow their example and don't try to pretend that you know everything. It wil

Leadership Tips And Advice Direct From The Pros

Image
Is It Time To Talk More About LEADERSHIP Building a trusting relationship with your employees is an important part of being a strong leader. Just because you're the boss does not mean that you are the only leader in the group, or even the smartest person in the room. Say thank you to your employees. Many studies have been done on the power of a thanks given from a manager to his or her employees. It increases productivity, often by a lot. Just a little graciousness really can help extend your power as a leader, so be active about it. Learn your employee's names. A great leader takes the time to learn the names of his or her most immediate staff, and even the names of the top performers under them. It shows them that you care enough about them to know them not just as a worker, but as a real person. Watch out for project creep. This can happen when your project's scope isn't clearly defined. If you have control over the project, resist the temptation to add more project

Leadership Coaching - Being Empowered vs. Limited

Image
A Coaching Power Tool By Debora Hofmann, Leadership Coach At the end of last year, our family had to move back from Beijing, China to Frankfurt, Germany. That meant a move across continents in the middle of a pandemic that neither was planned nor wanted by us. It was a huge challenge for me to walk alongside our kids through these tough months following the move, helping them through their emotional ups and many downs. It also meant that we had to face many more months of lockdown, as Germany was finding it much more difficult than China to gain control over the virus. Here are a few of my thoughts from that time: I don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be the stupid mum that is stuck at home having to care for the kids and everyone is just assuming that I’ll keep doing this while business travelers don’t even need to quarantine or need to have negative tests results for staying in a hotel. The measurements are not enough/don’t make any sense. Germany has no idea how to br
