An Effective Way to Tackle the Social Causes of Poor Health

Image
John Kuczala/Getty Images The new business model for health requires healthcare organizations to address not only medical problems, but social problems like hunger, loneliness, and trauma. That’s because these types of issues — known as the social determinants of health (SDOH) — are key impediments to achieving the outcomes healthcare organizations are now given incentives to deliver. These social determinants are foreign terrain for many healthcare organizations, but that hasn’t stopped them from entering the space. The number of reported health system-based SDOH programs has grown more than ten-fold in the past decade. This response would signify the kind of change long awaited by social advocates except for one thing: many such programs run a high risk of failure because they lack disciplined planning. The typical story is that a well-meaning clinician or healthcare executive secures funding to experiment with a SDOH program. Burdened with tight timelines and competing responsibil

How Much Do Practitioners Charge?

Image
These days, one of the most common questions I get asked by practitioners is how much they should be charging for client sessions. That’s why I’m revisiting a survey we conducted which asked 334 therapy practitioners about the costs involved in running their business and how much they charge for a session. And because a lot of practitioners find charging difficult, I’d like to ask you the same question now, so we can get a discussion going in the comments below, and hopefully help each other navigate the minefield that is charging for therapy services. Let me know in the comments below how you deal with charging, and enjoy the infographic. The Case for Finally Cleaning Your Desk

Image
Deborah Van Kirk/HBR Staff/Getty Images The physical environment of the workplace has a significant effect on the way that we work. When our space is a mess, so are we. That is certainly true from a simple logistical perspective: we lose precious work minutes every time we go searching for a lost paper on a cluttered desk. The same is true for those of us who have succeeded in becoming paperless at work: one international survey showed that information workers lose up to two hours a week fruitlessly searching for lost digital documents. But clutter can also affect us in more indirect ways. My research and that of others has shown that our physical environments significantly influence our cognition, emotions, and behavior, affecting our decision-making and relationships with others. Cluttered spaces can have negative effects on our stress and anxiety levels, as well as our ability to focus, our eating choices, and even our sleep. Much of the research (and much of the public enthusiasm

Illusion vs. Delusion – What’s the Difference? - Writing Explained

Image
Many words in English are confusing . They may appear similar, and they may even have related meanings. In most cases, though, words have clear definitions and should be used carefully. Using the wrong word could confuse your reader, or it could cause your writing to say something that you did not mean. Illusion and delusion are two confusing words that are mixed up by many writers.
